TULSA, Okla. – The ITA All-American Championships comes to close for the Commodores after falling in the quarterfinals. The loss does not come without mentioning the intense tournament action, riddled with several impressive victories for the `Dores, including a 6-4, 6-3, victory over the No. 2 ranked team in the country and dropping serve only once before quarterfinal action.
The duo of No. 22 Rhys Johnson and Gonzales Austin were ultimately eliminated by Southern California’s No.19 Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz, 6-2, 6-2.
“It was a tough match today,” said associate head coach Jamie Hunt. “We didn’t have a great serving day and Yannick (Hanfmann) and Roberto (Quiroz) did a good job of making us pay for hitting second serves. I’m proud of A.J. (Austin) and Rhys (Johnson) for how they played this tournament though. They beat some really good teams and established some great chemistry between the two of them that will help for the remainder of the year. I’m excited about the progress they have made together.”
Two SEC doubles teams will be represented in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon, Texas A&M and Tennessee. Vanderbilt will return to action in two weeks when they host the ITA Regional Championships Oct. 16-19 at the Currey Tennis Center.
