Dores End Sunday With a Win

After falling to No. 7 LSU, No. 17 Vanderbilt rebounds with 4-0 sweep of Butler

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — It was a split decision in the final doubleheader of the season for No. 17 Vanderbilt men’s tennis, as the Commodores dropped a 4-1 contest to No. 7 LSU before capping off the weekend with a 4-0 takedown of Butler at the Lummis Family Tennis Center.

Doubles play against the Tigers began with LSU (21-5, 7-4 SEC) claiming a win at the top position. Vanderbilt (15-9, 4-7 SEC) responded with a blow of its own at No. 2 doubles from sophomores Pablo Martinez Gomez and Callum Markowitz. The pair, playing together for the first time all season, notched a 6-4 ranked victory over No. 42 Erik Arutiunian and Matias Ponce De Leon. It was not enough to propel the Dores to a doubles point win, however, as the Tigers took the match at Court 3 to secure the early advantage.

Five of the six total singles matches went to third sets between the two teams. The Commodores got on the board first behind a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 comeback victory from No. 111 Martinez Gomez over No. 29 Olaf Pieczkowski. It was the highest-ranked win of the season for Martinez Gomez and the third total of his career. With the score evened up at 1-1, LSU moved ahead after picking up a win at its No. 6 position. The Tigers held strong in three-set battles at Courts 2 and 5, ultimately grinding out the two matches to finalize the 4-1 result.

Despite the loss, Vandy brought plenty of energy into the following match against Butler (6-13, 0-3 Big East). The Commodores surged ahead 1-0 after collecting wins from their top two doubles pairs. Juniors Hugo Coquelin and Danil Panarin opened doubles play against the Bulldogs with a 6-3 defeat of Riccardo Baldi and Arnesh Singh. No. 29 ranked senior Nathan Cox and freshman Hoyoung Roh wrapped up the early point in a 6-3 win over Nicolas Arts and Rahulniket Konakanchi.

After not playing since Feb. 15 against Lipscomb, freshman Cayden Wang returned to the singles lineup and made his presence known. Wang quickly moved past Nicholas Shirley 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to give Vanderbilt its first singles victory of the match. The result marked Wang’s seventh straight singles win; he is 8-3 across the fall and spring seasons. Panarin added a third point soon after on Court 1, sinking Baldi 6-1, 6-2. With multiple Commodores in position to deliver the clinch, it was freshman Jack Satterfield to cross the finish line. Satterfield netted a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Konakanchi as Vanderbilt wrapped up its weekend with a win.

No. 17 Vanderbilt returns to the road for a face-off with No. 21 Florida (12-10, 4-6 SEC) on Thursday in Gainesville. For more information, updates and exclusive match day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
