BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 35th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 road win over the Indiana Hoosiers Sunday afternoon.
The Commodores started the match by taking the doubles point, marking a 1-0 advantage. Vanderbilt capitalized on courts one and two with 6-4 wins on both thanks to Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe and Panu Virtanen and Lachlan McPhee. Maxwell Freeman and Daniel Valent fell on court three 6-2.
VU took first-set advantages on four singles courts. Harwell defeated Brandon Lam 7-5, 7-5 for Vandy’s first singles win of the day. The freshman now rides an undefeated, nine-match win streak.
At No. 2 singles position, No. 50 Klinger defeated Antonio Cembellin in a three-set victory to give the Dores a 3-0 advantage thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
Indiana picked up its two wins on courts five and one in tight three-set competitions. Zac Brodney defeated Freeman, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 52 Valent fell to Indiana’s Raheel Manji in a close 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 battle.
The Dores battled back in search of their fourth and final point, winning out on courts four and three to complete the 5-2 victory.
Vandy’s Rowe defeated a tough opponent in Bennett Crane on court four 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. Baker Newman rounded out the Vanderbilt victory with a tough 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(2) win over Keivon Tabrizi.
Vanderbilt will open Southeastern Conference play next weekend on the road facing Alabama at 6:00 p.m. CT on Friday.
