Dores drop to No. 12 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 36 Vanderbilt Commodores dropped the championship match of the ITA weekend tournament against No. 12 Pepperdine after beating BYU in yesterday’s pairing.

Freshmen Anton Kovrigin and Gonzales Austin teamed up to win the No. 3 doubles match against Hugh Clarke and Mousheg Hovhannisyan, though Pepperdine picked up the point by winning two of the matches.

Jeff Offerdahl forced two tiebreakers in his singles match, competing hard in the No. 5 position against David Sofaer, who eventually won the match for Pepperdine 7-6(9-7), 7-6(8-6).

Senior Charlie Jones split sets in the No. 1 position against No. 35 Finn Tearney, dropping the third set in a 10-7 decision.

“I thought we played really well at certain places, I think Charlie played really well in No. 1,” said head coach Ian Duvenhage. “Jeff did a good job, Anton, and then we unfortunately got thumped at other positions. But, I think all in all there are a lot of positives from the weekend and we’ll learn from it. We need to get healthy and to full strength and if we can do that, we’re going to be tough to handle.”

Vanderbilt heads to Bloomington, Indiana next weekend to face Harvard and Indiana as the young season continues.
