BATON ROUGE, La. – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team fell short to LSU 4-3 in its first conference matchup Friday at the LSU Tennis Complex.
Opening in doubles, the Tigers struck first to secure the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Commodore pair Max Freeman and Christiaan Worst came up short to LSU’s Watson and Kozlov, 6-3, followed by George Harwell and Macsen Sisam falling to Wagner and Hohmann, 6-3.
In singles, the Dores looked to bounce back with senior Panu Virtanen putting the Commodores on the board with a straight set win over Descarrega, 6-1, 6-2.
The Tigers quickly pushed ahead to a 3-1 lead with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 over senior Billy Rowe and junior Max Freeman.
Sisam battled on court 4 to claim the first set, 6-4, however, Wagner came back to win 6-2 in the second set followed by a 6-3 defeat in the third to clinch the match for the Tigers.
The teams decided to play the match out where the Dores collected two additional singles victories to mark the final score at 4-3.
Sophomore Marcus Ferreira outlasted Thomas at No. 6, 7-6, 6-4, followed by Harwell closing the match for the Dores with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Vanderbilt will return to action to host Texas A&M in its second conference match on Sunday at noon at the Currey Tennis Center.
