NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt swimming fell in a close contest to SEC opponent Alabama, 158-103, on Friday afternoon at the Centennial Sportsplex.
With the loss, Vanderbilt is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in SEC action, while Alabama improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference.
In the dual versus LSU just over two weeks ago, freshman Jenn Mann broke two school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Against Alabama, Mann broke her own records this time around.
In the 100 breast, Mann finished first with a time of 1:02.74, which beat her previous school record of 1:03.09. The Victoria, British Columbia, native then took home first place in the 200 breast with a new school record time of 2:14.28. She previously held the record for two weeks with a time of 2:15.03.
As a team, the Commodores took home victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke, in addition to the 100 and 200 breast.
“It was a good day of racing,” said Vanderbilt head coach Jeremy Organ. “I think everyone was excited to be at home and we had a good crowd in the stands. I think we did a good job or racing today and I thought we put up some good times. Overall, we’re pretty happy with how today went.”
Fellow freshman Hannah Martin won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.95, while Lauren Torres came in second at 1:56.21. Martin registered her first collegiate win with her victory in the 200 free.
Caroline Thomas then won the 100 free in a time of 52.17, just edging out Alabama’s Brittany Gilbert (52.71). The win for Thomas was her first individual race win of the 2012-13 season.
Chrissy Oberg won the 200 back as she touched the wall in a time of 2:03.72, giving Vanderbilt its final win of the day. Oberg has now won the 200 back in two-straight meets to start the season.
“We just need to keep working hard in the pool during the week and the weekends will take care of itself,” Organ said.
The Commodores are back in the pool next Saturday, Nov. 3, when Vanderbilt hosts Tulane and Western Kentucky at the Centennial Sportsplex. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
