OXFORD, Miss. – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team was handed its third consecutive loss Sunday afternoon as Ole Miss picked up a 4-0 victory. Due to cold temperatures and predicted rain in the area, the match was moved indoors to the Gillam Sports Center.
Ole Miss got on the board first after winning two of three doubles matches. The duo of brothers Marcel and Chris Thiemann, ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated Adam Baker and Ryan Lipman, 8-3, in the No. 1 match. Charlie Jones and Alex Zotov fell 8-5 in the No. 2 match for the Rebels to claim the doubles point. Bryant Salcedo and Blake Bazarnik were tied 7-7 with Jonas Lutjen and Johan Backstrom on court three was doubles play was suspended.
With only three indoor courts available, singles matches one, two and three were the first to play. After falling 6-0 in the first set, Jones battled with Kalle Norberg on court three, but ultimately dropped the second set 7-5, as the Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Baker fell to Tucker Vorster, 6-3, 6-4, before Marcel Thiemann defeated Lipman in straight sets to clinch the win for the Rebels. The other three singles matches had not gotten underway by the time the match was decided.
Vanderbilt steps out of conference play on Wednesday as the Commodores host Ball State on Wednesday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.
