Dores Conclude Cabo

No. 5 Vanderbilt finishes 12th at the Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The No. 5-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team concluded the 16th Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday, as the Commodores posted a 12th-place finish on its annual trip to the Baja California peninsula.

Vandy finished its three-day stay at Twin Dolphin Golf Club with a score of 18-over 870. The Dores posted round scores of 292-285-292 at the Cabo Collegiate. Vanderbilt had a pair of golfers finish inside the top 30 on the player leaderboard, as senior Wells Williams paced the Dores by tying for 21st.

“Obviously, we didn’t play to our standards this week, and that’s disappointing,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “We lost our edge in that first round, and we weren’t able to get it back. This is a course where you just cannot fake it, and you have to stay mentally tough and locked in. Toughness is earned by doing hard things. I’ll take a lot of responsibility for this week because, as I’ve said, this is a shared responsibility, and we weren’t as prepared as we needed to be.

“It’s now up to all of us to respond with actions and embrace getting better. I know I love this team, and I love how much they care. I’m excited about us getting in the dirt and getting better so we can play closer to our potential.”

Williams concluded the Cabo Collegiate at even par 213. The All-American had his score count in all three rounds this week, as he extends his consecutive rounds streak to 56-straight rounds. Williams posted round scores of 69-71-73 over his 54 holes of play at the Twin Dolphin Golf Club. The senior carded an eagle in Tuesday’s Round 3, as he finished 2-under on the par-5 Hole 13

Junior Chase Nevins, who was playing as an individual at the Cabo Collegiate, finished tied for 30th with a 54-hole score of 2-over 215. The Great Falls, Virginia, native held round scores of 74-69-72 during his week in Mexico.  Nevins collected his fifth under-par round of the season on Monday, as he finished Round 2 at 2-under 69. Like Williams, Nevins collected an eagle on Hole 13 in Round 3.

No. 11-ranked Oklahoma State claimed the team title at the 16th Cabo Collegiate, as the Cowboys carded 22-under 830 to post a one-stroke, come-from-behind victory over No. 9 Arkansas. OSU’s Preston Stout earned medalist honors in Cabo with a score of 15-under 198 to win the tournament by seven strokes.

The No. 5 Commodores return to action March 20-22 to compete in the Linger Longer Invitational at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Eatonton, Georgia.
