FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 6-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team collected its second victory of the 2025-26 season, as the Commodores concluded the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab in a four-way tie for the team title with a three-round total of 10-over 850.
The Dores posted the second-best team score in Round 3, as Vandy went 2-over 282 on Tuesday to climb four spots up the leaderboard and end the prestigious Ben Hogan Collegiate in a four-way tie for first with No. 5 Texas, No. 8 Virginia and No. 14 North Carolina. It is Vanderbilt’s second team victory of the season, as the Commodores opened the 2025-26 campaign with a win at the Carmel Cup. It is Vandy’s 56th team victory since 1998-99, while it is Vanderbilt’s 48th win under Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh.
Vanderbilt came off the course two strokes behind North Carolina and Virginia, who were still closing out play. The Cavaliers and Tar Heels both stumbled down the stretch to allow the Commodores and Texas to pull even for a share of the team title at the end of play.
The Commodores held round scores of 285-283-282 at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. It is the second time in three seasons that Vanderbilt has won the event, as the Dores captured the team title in 2023, with All-American Cole Sherwood winning a playoff hole to claim medalist honors. Overall, it is Vandy’s third team title at the Colonial Country Club, as the Commodores won the 2016 Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational.
“What a great team battle out there today,” expressed Limbaugh. “These boys are building layers of toughness each time out, and I’m very proud of them. It shows a lot about our character responding this way after the way we finished yesterday. This was an extremely challenging course this week, and it required patience and resilience. These days go a long way in building Championship culture, and it’s really cool to have finished as co-champions.”
Senior Wells Williams paced the way for Vanderbilt in Fort Worth, Texas, as the All-American carded even par over three rounds to finish in a tie for sixth. Williams posted scores of 71-67-72 and had his score count in each round to extend his consecutive rounds counted streak to 47 dating back to the 2023-24 campaign. The highlight of Williams’ week came in Round 1, when he collected his second collegiate one-in-hole, as he aced Hole 13 on Monday. It is Williams’ third top-six finish of the season, while it is the ninth top-10 finish of his Vanderbilt career.
Williams was one of two Vanderbilt golfers to ace a hole at the Ben Hogan Collegiate. Freshman Michael Riebe accomplished the feat for the first time in his college career in Round 3 on the 194-yard Hole 8.
Fellow freshman Jon Ed Steed finished in a tie for 27th at 4-over 214. Steed was one of three Dores to card even par in Round 3, being joined by junior Chase Nevins and sophomore Ryan Downes.
“It was big to have all five guys in it all day long,” said Limbaugh. “I’m proud of Ryan and Chase with the way they got us going and played with confidence. Jon Ed was rock solid all day and super proud of how he battled after a tough first round. Obviously, Wells is playing at a really high level, and he did a great job finding a way without his best stuff this week.”
