Dores break school relay record on Day 2 of SEC Championships

Feb. 15, 2018

College Station, Texas – The Vanderbilt swim team broke three personal-best records and a school record in a great day of swims on Day 2 of the SEC Swimming and Diving championships Thursday at the Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M.

Two Dores broke personal-best marks in the same heat of the 200-yard individual medley during Thursday’s preliminary races. Brooke Ellis swam to a 2:04.77 right after Hannah Hunt touched the wall at 2:04.71.

Vandy wasn’t done with personal-bests, however, as Hunt’s older sister, Madeline, went on to break her personal-best time in the 50-yard freestyle, coming in at 23.33 seconds.

“Our eyes were on records tonight,” Madeline Hunt said. “Everyone has been doing such a good job this meet, we were thinking about putting it all out there tonight.”

Johanna Goldblatt continued to turn in good performances in the water during the week, as she came in first place in her heat of the 50 freestyle, missing out on breaking her own school record by only one-tenth of a second.

In the event finals, the Commodores broke another school record, setting a time of 1:31.75 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Goldblatt, Breanna Sapienza, Brenda Cha and Madeline Hunt beat the previous mark of 1:32.38 set in 2016. Goldblatt and Sapienza were on that record-setting team as well.

“It was a good day for us, I’m really happy for the girls,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “They came together as a group, and it shows in their times. It’s been good for the program.”

One of the biggest points of emphasis for Organ heading into the 200 free relay was focusing on the individual 50-yard splits, and Organ said the swimmers did a good job of putting their splits together.”All four did a tremendous job in breaking the school record. That’s our goal every time we race, setting the bar a little lower.”

The Dores are back in action for Day 3 of the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Friday morning, swimming in the preliminary races of the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle.
