NASHVILLE – Eleven Commodores notched goals as the No. 15 Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Presbyterian College, 19-5, Wednesday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

The Commodores (7-4) scored the first three goals of the game in less than three minutes and would open up a 6-0 lead before the Blue Hose found the back of the net. Sophomore attacker Katie Mastropieri led all scorers with five points on two assists and three goals, including a nifty behind-the-head shot in the second half (pictured below).

“I”m pleased that our team came out so aggressively,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “And I was happy to see so many players come in and maintain that level of play. Katie obviously came in and put up points, and I thought Alex Duckenfield also did some nice things for us.”

Mastropieri and classmate Abby Wheeler were the only Commodores to record hat-tricks on the day, though Duckenfield, junior Casey Bakker and seniors Kacie Connors and Alex Priddy all scored twice. Other goals were recorded by senior Kendall Pittinger, junior Carly Linthicum, sophomore Ellie Kraus, and freshmen Meggie Ramzy and Rebecca Ryan. Duckenfield, Kraus and Ryan all recorded their first collegiate goals.

The Commodores got off to a fast start thanks to their domination on the draw. Behind six draw controls by senior Ally Carey, Vanderbilt held a 19-6 advantage in draws. Other standout statistics included a team-high three ground balls shared by freshman Gabrielle Nesi and reigning American Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week Kacie Connors.

Three Commodores combined to make eight saves on the day in goal. Senior Natalie Wills earned the start, making a pair of stops before giving way to junior Chelsea Pasfield 24 minutes into the game. Pasfield also stopped two shots in her 24 minutes before freshman Maddie Kratz made her first collegiate appearance and stopped four shots before the Blue Hose (1-10) scored their fifth of the day with one second remaining in regulation.

The Commodores will close out their current three-game home stand on Sunday, April 8, by playing host to ALC rival Ohio State. The opening draw between the Commodores and 12th-ranked Buckeyes is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Admission to all regular season home games at the VU Lacrosse Complex is free.
