A goal with six seconds remaining in regulation broke the fourth tie of the game and led Denver to a 10-9 victory over the home standing Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team Saturday.

Vanderbilt scored the first three goals of the game and led for the majority of the contest. The Pioneers tied the game up at 4-4 in the 9:11 mark of the first half, but the Commodores answered in less than a minute to take a 5-4 advantage to the break.

In the second half, the VU lead was never larger than two goals. The Pioneers would tie the game twice more only to have Vanderbilt re-take the lead in less than a minute.

But Denver’s Kara Secora scored her third of the contest with 12:48 to play to knot the game at 9-9, and the Pioneer defense held. A VU turnover with two minutes remaining gave Denver one final possession. The Pioneers held the ball until the final seconds, when Jill Remenapp fed Jenn Etzel to give Denver its first lead of the game with six seconds remaining.

Vanderbilt senior Carly Linthicum scored five goals for the third consecutive game. Her stat line also included two assists and a pair of caused turnovers. Four other Commodores would score a goal apiece: junior Abby Wheeler and freshmen Kelly Chandler, Alexa Kunowsky and Amanda Lockwood. Senior Courtney Kirk had two assists.

Chandler led the Commodores with three caused turnovers, while Linthicum, Kunowsky and junior Brandi Byner each causing a pair of DU miscues. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Pasfield reached double-figures in saves for the second time this season, stopping 10 Pioneer shots. Her opposite number, Hannah Hook, made eight saves for Denver.

DU’s Remenapp matched Linthicum’s seven-point output by assisting on five goals. She scored or assisted on the Pioneers’ final five goals.

The Commodores (1-2) will head back on the road this week to face their first ranked opponent, traveling to Boston College for a 12 Noon CT start on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Next weekend, the Vanderbilt opens American Lacrosse Conference action by playing host to Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 24.
