Vanderbilt spent its first full day in Birmingham Wednesday continuing its preparation for the BBVA Compass Bowl.
Following breakfast and team meetings, head coach James Franklin and his staff led the squad in the first of three practices this week at Hoover High School, located only a couple of miles from the team hotel.
After the two-hour session, Franklin and players met with the media to discuss the Commodores’ upcoming matchup against Houston Saturday.
Immediately following practice and lunch, it was time to give back to the community as more than 20 Vanderbilt student-athletes, coaches and staff had the privilege of visiting patients at Children’s of Alabama. The hospital, located in downtown Birmingham, provides specialized medical care for ill and injured children across the state.
The Commodores spent 90 minutes touring the pediatric medical facility, going floor to floor with members of the Houston Cougars to deliver toys, sign autographs and spread joy to children.
The hospital stop is one of many activities scheduled for the teams throughout week leading up to the game, and the trip was highly popular at sign-up even though only a limited number of participants were allowed to attend the BBVA Compass Bowl’s special event. Both squads were also guests of Stardome Comedy Club Wednesday night for dinner, laughs and entertainment.
Thursday’s agenda includes another practice as well as a team tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
