Nashville, Tenn. – Three Vanderbilt preseason All-Southeastern Conference candidates – quarterback Jay Cutler, defensive end Jovan Haye and linebacker Moses Osemwegie – will join Head Coach Bobby Johnson and the squad’s newest assistant coach for the first of five Commodores in the Community events taking place Thursday night at The Mall at Green Hills.

The three players, Johnson and first-year offensive assistant coach Kenny Carter will greet fans, sign autographs and participate in prize drawings featuring game tickets and authentic Commodore game jerseys from 5-7 p.m., in the spacious plaza located at the south entrance of The Mall at Green Hills.  The mall entrance is located on Abbott Martin Road in southeast Nashville. The team announced Wednesday that Cutler, All-American offensive line candidate Justin Geisinger and two-year starting fullback Matthew Tant will join Coach Johnson Friday afternoon at the Country Music Association MusicFest “Sports Zone” outside the Coliseum.  The four Vanderbilt football representatives are scheduled to appear from 4-6 p.m. on the lawn outside the Coliseum south endzone gates.  More Commodore players, including former north Nashville prep stars Robert Dinwiddie and Erik Davis, will join their head coach to participate in a third event scheduled next Monday at the Chick-Fil-A restaurant outside the Rivergate Mall in the Hendersonville-Madison area. “We’re excited to get out and have a chance to meet Commodore fans.  We would love to see lots of our supporters at each of these events,” Johnson said. The team’s outreach effort started Tuesday afternoon when Johnson, his coaches and several veteran players welcomed nearly 400 Commodore fans to the McGugin Athletic Center for “Behind the Dores.” The popular event, presented by the National Commodore Club, offered fans a behind-the-scenes look of the Vanderbilt football team.  The event attracted a live remote by Commodore radio flagship WGFX 104.5 FM and drew numerous Vanderbilt administrators, including Chancellor Gordon Gee and Vice Chancellor for Student Life David Williams II. The first Commodores in the Community event has a marketing angle.  The Mall at Green Hills event features a contest aimed at identifying “Kid Commodore.” Young contestants, ages 5-10, will meet Coach Johnson, then get a brief quiz on their Commodore knowledge.  The ultimate winner earns a role in the team’s 2004 advertisement campaign.  Several prizes will be awarded to Commodore fans attending The Mall at Green Hills event Thursday.  The top prizes include a pair of game  jerseys worn during the 2003 season, a miniature Commodore helmet, an autographed football and a Family Pack Season Ticket package (2 adult tickets/2 children tickets) valued at $215. Posters and schedule cards also will be available.  Face painters and clowns also are scheduled to add to the family activity. The Thursday event also marks the first opportunity for Commodore fans to meet their newest assistant coach. Carter, who joined the Vanderbilt staff before spring drills, will mentor Vanderbilt running backs.  He has an impressive coaching resume, having spent the last three years as a key assistant to legendary coach Joe Paterno at Penn State.
