Curran's Six Goals Not Enough Against Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Despite a six-goal performance from sophomore Margie Curran, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team fell in a heartbreaker to No. 7 Notre Dame, 12-11, Sunday at Krause Stadium.

After Vanderbilt took its first lead in the 44th minute, the game was back and forth for the remainder. Notre Dame would tie the game for the fourth time in the final two minutes, scoring the game-winning goal off an eight-meter attempt with 18 seconds on the clock.

The game began with a pair of All-American candidates trading goals. Notre Dame’s Christi Foote opened the scoring 37 seconds into the game, only to be answered by Vanderbilt’s Curran three minutes later. Coming out of a 2-2 tie, Notre Dame’s Jillian Byers scored three straight goals to give the Fighting Irish a 5-2 lead.

Notre Dame would expand their lead to four before the Commodores made a late-half comeback. Goals by Curran, sophomore Nicole Pugno and senior Kate Hickman brought the Commodores back to within two at the half, 7-5.

The Commodores exploded out of the break, scoring the first four goals of the second half to take a 9-7 lead. Curran and junior Jennifer Tapscott tallied goals to tie the game at 7-7 before a pair of scores from junior Kendall Thrift gave Vanderbilt its first advantage of the game.

Four minutes later, the Irish tied the game with goals off a pair of Foote assists. Goals from Curran in the 49th and 53rd minutes gave Vanderbilt a pair of one-goal leads, but Notre Dame would tie the game each time. Byers’ tallied her fifth and sixth goals of the game in the final two minutes to secure the win for the home team.

The Commodores end their 2006 season with a 6-10 record, 2-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference.
