NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Margie Curran broke Vanderbilt’s all-time career records for assists and points to lead the Commodores to a 17-7 American Lacrosse Conference victory over visiting Ohio State Friday at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
The Moorestown, N.J. native had two goals and five assists on the afternoon. Her second assist — on a goal by fellow senior Ashley Paschall — broke Kendall Thrift’s career assists record of 66, set just last season. Curran finished the day with 70 career assists.
Curran’s sixth point of the day, an unassisted goal early in the second half, gave her another milestone — the all-time record for points at Vanderbilt. The previous record of 219 points was established by VU great Sue Napolitano in 2000. With seven total points on Friday, Curran now has 221 points for her VU career.
The Commodores (9-4, 3-1 ALC) never trailed in reaching their third conference victory and securing no worse than second place for the upcoming ALC Tournament. Vanderbilt scored the first three goals of the game and later used a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.
Vanderbilt would score the first five goals of the second half and lead by no less than nine in the closing minutes.
Reigning ALC Player of the Week Brooke Shinaberry had another outstanding game in goal. She saved eight of the 15 shots that came her way and was aggressive out of the cage to help the Commodores keep possession.
The Commodores controlled the center circle, as well. Led by six draw controls from Curran and three from Giordano, Vanderbilt held a 20-6 advantage on the draw.
Offensively, Vanderbilt’s attack filled up the stat sheet. Along with Curran’s seven points, three other Commodores had hat-tricks — junior Cara Giordano, sophomore Carter Foote and freshman Katherine Denkler. Paschall contributed a pair of goals, while senior Leslie Koch, sophomore Megan Gibson and freshman Emily Franke also scored.
Jessica Patane and Amanda Shimp each scored twice for the Buckeyes (7-6, 0-2 ALC). OSU goalkeeper Kristen Gilwee made an impressive 15 saves on the day.
Vanderbilt hits the road tomorrow morning to travel to Albany, N.Y. The Commodores will face the Great Danes on Sunday, April 13, at 12 Noon ET. Vanderbilt then heads to Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 16, before returning home to play host to Duke on Sunday, April 20.
