With fall break at Vanderbilt over the weekend, the men’s and women’s cross country teams took some time to make a difference in the community.
The women’s team went to the Ronald McDonald House just south of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and cooked for some of the guests. The men’s team participate in the American Heart Association’s Hart Walk on Saturday morning in Nashville.
“Both teams took it upon themselves to organize a community service project during fall break,” said Vanderbilt assistant coach Rhonda Riley. “It was a great chance for the teams to give back to the community and help others who needed someone to connect with.”
Junior Kara Slavoski was also appreciative of the time spent at the Ronald McDonald House.
“We appreciate the opportunity to gain perspective from and serve people who are less fortunate than we are,” Slavoski said.
Riley added that the visit was about more than just feeding a family staying at the house a home-cooked meal.
“The women really enjoyed preparing a home cooked meal, but more importantly talking to the families and spending the afternoon with them,” Riley added.
For the men, everyone from the seniors to the freshmen was thrilled to participate in the Heart Walk.
“I’m happy the team was able to help out,” said senior Tomas Salazar.
“It was a lot of fun,” added freshman Nick French.
