TULSA, Okla. – It took Vanderbilt senior Nick Cromydas little time to get back up to speed in his first match of the season on Monday. Playing in the qualifying singles at the 2008 ITA D’Novo All-American Championships, Cromydas advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over Georgia Tech’s Kevin King.
With the win, Cromydas will now face Dennis Lajola of Hawaii in the second round. The match will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Also competing in the qualifying singles was junior Vijay Paul. Paul dropped his first-round match to San Diego State’s Bartosz Golas, 6-3, 6-0.
Cromydas and Paul will also team up to compete in doubles on Tuesday. The Vanderbilt duo will open play at 2:30 p.m. against Rice’s Christoph Muller and Bruno Rosa.
The ITA D’Novo All-American Championships is considered to be the most prestigious of all the fall college tennis tournaments. The singles draw is composed of 128 players, while the doubles draw features 64 teams. The top-16 singles players and eight doubles teams will advance to the main draw, which will begin on Oct. 9.
