Coquelin Comeback

Junior Dore overcomes first-set deficit, moves on to round of 16

ATHENS, Ga. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis kept its hopes of adding another NCAA qualifier alive after junior Hugo Coquelin pulled out a three-set thriller to move on at the ITA South Sectional Championships hosted by Georgia.

Coquelin went up against Matthieu Chambonniere of Ole Miss in the opening round of 32. The Rebel opened the match with a resounding 6-1 first set win, putting the Dores on the brink of elimination after No. 46 ranked junior Danil Panarin was eliminated earlier in the day. Coquelin rebounded in the second, evening the contest behind a 7-5 frame. The 1-1 tie put Coquelin in uncharted territory with his first three-set match of the fall season. And in the clutch, it was all Vandy; Coquelin cruised to a 6-1 set win to claim the match and advance.

Tomorrow pits Coquelin against Miami’s Antonio Prat in the singles round of 16. The match is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. The ITA South Sectional Championships tournament page is available online with live streaming available here.
