Commodores Win 12th Straight, Lafield Scores Two

Columbia, S.C. — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team won its 12th straight game and stayed undefeated in the SEC with a 2-0 victory over South Carolina. The No. 18 Commodores (12-1-0, 5-0-0 SEC) were lifted by two goals from junior forward Lea Lafield (Dallas, Texas) as they posted their 11th shutout of the season, one shy of the school and SEC record.

Lafield scored her first goal from outside the 18-yard line in the 22:21 minute mark. The Vanderbilt defense took it from their, helped out by four saves from junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin (Charlotte, N.C.) Griffin moved into fifth place in VU history with her 110th career save, passing Stacee Sproul’s 108. It was also Griffin’s ninth shutout and 12th career shutout, giving her sole possession of second place on the Vanderbilt career shutouts list.

Lafield then scored her fourth goal of the season and second of the night 10-yards out from the net with less than seven minutes to go in the game. Both goals were unassisted. The Gamecocks (5-7-0, 1-4-0 SEC) tried to match Vanderbilt’s intensity, firing eight shots — seven in the second half — including four shots on goal. By comparison, Vanderbilt fired only 12 shots and only five on goal.

The Commodores will try to stay unbeaten in winless play with their toughest opponent to date, the No. 20 Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla. Sunday at 2 p.m. eastern time. Florida (8-3-1, 3-1-1 SEC) beat Kentucky 4-2 Friday night.
