Commodores Travel to England 8-19-03 8/19/2003 The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team has had a successful first week on their summer trip to England. The team has seen some of Britain’s most notable sites, including Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, and also has faced off against some of Britain’s premier lacrosse players. This past weekend, Vanderbilt faced Putney Club, located just south of London. The home-standing squad was made up of players from in and around London, including a number of members of the English National Team. Playing under international rules, which included 15-minute quarters (instead of 30-minute halves) and eight players in the offensive and defensive zones (instead of the normal seven), the Commodores posted a 9-4 victory. Ashley Bastinelli and Liz Exline split the day’s goalkeeping duties for Vanderbilt, posting 10 saves each. Bastinelli allowed only one goal, while Exline was responsible for a team-high four ground balls in the match. Offensively, the Commodores were led by three goals from 2003 graduate Jeannie Crawley. Rising senior Jess Roguski added two goals and a pair of assists, with sophomore Kate Hickman also scoring twice. Seniors Lauren Peck and Lindsay Nauman rounded out the scoring for the Commodores, who used four goals in the final period of the match to secure the win. Seniors Michelle Allen and Joanna Mooney and graduates Colleen Morris and Jess Mundt contributed assists to the attack. Vanderbilt’s defense forced a total of 17 turnovers, led by ’03 grad Rebecca Ferrell’s three. The Commodores’ next action will be against the Heaton Mersey Lacrosse Club in Stockport, England, four hours northeast of London, on Tuesday. |
