Commodores swim past Campbell 144.5-117.5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swim team returned from the finals break and defeated Campbell 144.5-117.5 at Centennial Sportsplex Saturday night. Four Commodores won their first races of the season against Campbell to go along with numerous podium finishes throughout the meet.

The Commodores got off to a fast start in the 400-yard medley relay. The relay team of Johanna Goldblatt, Kara Lucenti, Breanna Sapienza, and Kayla Moran swam to a first place finish with a time of 3:54.74. Madeline Hunt, Kathryn Coughlin, Paige Hamilton and Summer Brown finished in third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:59.05.

Summer Brown followed up her third place finish in the relay and picked up the Commodores first individual win of the night and her first win of the season in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.48). The Commodores swept the podium in the 200 freestyle with a runner-up finish from Paige Hamilton (1:55.15) and a third place finish from Carrie Bencic (1:58.51).

Sophomore Johanna Goldblatt placed first in the next event of the night, the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.84. This was Goldblatt’s second win in the 100-yard backstroke this season. Freshman Amanda Chabbott earned a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:00.18.

Kathryn Coughlin kept up the Commodores winning ways in the next event, the 100-yard breaststroke. She won the third-straight race for the `Dores, and her first win of the season, by edging out Campbell’s Taylor McMinn by less than a second (1:06.37).

Rachel Koch increased the streak to four-straight wins in the 200-yard butterfly. Koch also picked up her first win of the season with a time of 2:05.30. Freshman Namilla Sanchez competed in the 200-yard butterfly for the first time in her collegiate career against Campbell. She earned a third place finish with a time of 2:08.99.

The Commodores win streaked was snapped in the 50-yard freestyle but the `Dores were not left off the podium. Breanna Sapienza finished runner-up in the 50 freestyle, just .13 seconds behind Michelle Case of Campbell. Summer Brown continued her impressive night in the next event. Brown finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.87), picking up her third of four podium finishes on the night.

The next event of the night was the 200-yard backstroke and Amanda Chabbott picked up the `Dores fifth win of the evening. She finished with a time of 2:06.95 to earn her first collegiate victory. Madeline Hunt finished runner-up to Chabbott with a time of 2:08.13. It was Hunt’s second podium finish of the night and her best finish in the 200-yard backstroke this season.

The Commodores would go on to win the next two events of the night, the 200-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle. School-record holder Kara Lucenti placed first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.33. Lucenti swam to an NCAA B Standard time last time out at the Phill Hansel Invitational and this was her third win in this event on the year.

Freshman Selah Peacock earned her first win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.93. Fellow freshman Namilla Sanchez finished just behind Peacock in second place with a time of 5:10.03.

The `Dores would end the meet with second and third place finishes in the final three events of the night. Kayla Moran placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.21) while Carrie Bencic finished third with a time of 58.61. Breanna Sapienza finished runner-up for the second time in the meet in the 100-yard IM (1:00.25) and Rachel Koch finished in third with a time of 1:02.64.

In the final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the relay team of Kathryn Coughlin, Madeline Hunt, Kayla Moran, and Johanna Goldblatt came in second place with a time of 1:38.54. Paige Hamilton, Summer Brown, Kate Hornaday, and Breanna Sapienza finished just behind them in third place with a time of 1:38.98.

The Commodores will have a few more days of practice before they are off for the holiday break. The `Dores will be back in the pool again on Jan. 20-21 for a two-day tri-meet with Arkansas and Houston at Centennial Sportsplex starting at 2 pm on Friday. Saturday will be Senior Day for the six seniors and the ceremonies will begin at 10:45 am.
