WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Vanderbilt Commodores (6-5, 3-2) traveled to the nation’s capital to face the Georgetown Hoyas (6-7, 4-1) in a matchup of two teams with 3-1 records in conference play. The game was back-and-forth for the first 20 minutes of the game but the Hoyas pulled away at the end of the first half and controlled the rest of the game, defeated the Commodores 18-11.
Vanderbilt started the scoring off just over a minute into the game. Sophomore Melanie Becker took the feed from Abby Quirk and stuffed it in the back of the cage.
Georgetown would get the next two goals to take the lead but the Commodores would answer quickly. Caroline Peters scored off the assist from Jill Doherty just 13 seconds after the Hoyas took the lead.
The Dores would score the next two goals, the first coming from Kayla Peterson off the assist from Emily Mathewson. Then freshman Gwyn Devin would put the free position opportunity in the back of the cage and gave the Dores a 4-2 lead.
Georgetown would answer with a 3-0 run of its own and regained the lead with 21 minutes remaining in the half. Jill Doherty would score the next goal to tie the game at five less than a minute after Georgetown regained the lead.
The Hoyas would answer Doherty’s goal to once again take the lead at 6-5 with 19:24 left in the first half. This time it was Julie Blaze to step up for the Commodores. She scored on the free position shot to tie the game at six.
Georgetown would take control over the final 10 minutes of the half. They kept the Dores off the board and scored the final three goals to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
The Commodores would outscore the Hoyas 3-2 in the first 10 minutes of the second half with goals coming from Julie Blaze and MacKenzie Lange. The Dores would be down 11-9 but that would be the closest they would get. Georgetown finished the game on a 7-2 run to close out the win. The final two goals for the Dores came from Doherty, giving her a hat trick on the afternoon.
Doherty added three draw controls, two caused turnovers, an assist and ground ball to her three goals on the afternoon. Julie Blaze had two goals, three draw controls, two ground balls, an assist and caused turnover. Caroline Peters also had two goals on the afternoon along with a ground ball.
Madison Foglio and Lily Argyle made appearances in the cage for the Dores. Argyle made nine saves and scooped up a team-high five ground balls in over 48 minutes of action.
The Commodores will look to bounce back next time out against Denver. The Dores will hit the road to face the Pioneers this Wednesday with the game slated for a 3 pm CT start.
