NASHVILLE, Tenn. — It was another doubleheader split for the No. 13 ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, falling 4-0 to No. 11 Georgia before sinking Eastern Kentucky 4-0 at the Lummis Family Tennis Center on Sunday.
The opening match against Georgia (14-5, 6-4 SEC) saw both teams notch a win early in doubles play. The duo of junior Hugo Coquelin and freshman Jack Satterfield got the ball rolling at the No. 3 position, taking down Derrick Chen and Noah Johnston 6-2. After the Bulldogs evened it up at Court 2, all eyes turned to No. 1 doubles for a back-and-forth battle between No. 29 senior Nathan Cox and freshman Hoyoung Roh and Georgia’s No. 26 ranked Arda Azkara and Santiago Giamichelle. It was ultimately the Bulldogs who pulled out the match, 6-4, to secure the doubles point.
Vanderbilt (14-7, 4-5 SEC) was unable to shift the momentum in singles play as Georgia claimed four of six first set leads. No. 111 sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez looked to have provided a spark for the Commodores after snatching the opening frame from No. 37 Azkara at the top singles spot. The Bulldogs, however, never let Vandy claw its way back into the match, piecing together three straight points en route to a 4-0 win.
The Commodores rebounded against Eastern Kentucky (9-13), swiftly taking the doubles point to open the match. Cox and Roh got back into the win column behind a 6-2 victory over Marek Nano and Nuno Pinheiro. Senior Tighe Brunetti and junior Danil Panarin delivered the decisive win at the No. 2 position, downing Joao Barreto and Ilie Cazac 6-2. Vanderbilt showed no signs of slowing down in singles play, pulling away from the Colonels 4-0. Satterfield, Panarin and Brunetti generated the three singles wins to seal the match for the black and gold.
Vanderbilt continues its homestand on March 27 against Kentucky (12-9, 3-6 SEC) before hosting No. 7 LSU (20-4, 6-3 SEC) and Butler (6-11) on March 29 in the final doubleheader of the Dores’ season.
