COLUMBIA, Mo. — Melissa Cowen and Aubrey Hull each recorded a pair of top-three finishes to help Vanderbilt swimming to a split in its tri-meet at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on Saturday.
Cowen led the Commodores in the 100 and 200 breast, with Hull recording the team’s best marks in the 100 and 200 back as Vandy earned a 206-46 victory over McKendree while dropping their matchup with the host Tigers.
“There are a lot of good things we can take from today as we look forward to the next couple of weeks,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “We had strong performances from many individuals today. I was really happy with Melissa and Aubrey, especially with their 200s.”
The Dores swim again next weekend with a two-day tri-meet against Indiana State and Illinois that begins Friday at 6 p.m. CT in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Meet Highlights
-Hull and Cowen posted the Dores’ best individual results of the meet with second-place finishes in the 200 back and 200 breast, respectively.
-Madelyn Porter and Merritt Zieminick touched the wall in third and fourth place in the 1,000 free, with the former also recording a third-place result in the 500 free.
-Hull, Quinlan Hinerfeld and Sadie Suppiger placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 back.
-Cowen and Emily Constable finished the 100 breast in third and fourth place.
Notes
-With a time of 54.77 in the 100 back, Hull became the first Dore to meet the CSCAA National Invitational Championship B cut this season.
-The sophomore accomplished the feat again later in the meet with a 1:59.02 mark in the 200 back.
-Cowan achieved the CSCAA NIC B standard in both the 100 (1:02.90) and 200 (2:15.20) breast, with her time in the latter race moving her into fifth place on the Commodores’ all-time performer list in the event.
-Suppiger’s 2:01.40 time in the 200 back made the CSCAA NIC B cut as well.
-Both Bailey Ratzburg (4:29.07) and Liv Gooding (4:29.40) posted CSCAA B standards in the final individual race of the afternoon, the 400 IM.
-The Commodores defeated McKendree in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
-This was Vandy’s first trip to Columbia since Jan. 28, 2016.
-It was the first time Vanderbilt competed in a month after last swimming against North Florida on Oct. 4.
