Houston, Texas – The Vanderbilt swim team heads to Houston, Texas to compete in the 2018 Phill Hansel Invitational this weekend.
Vanderbilt will take on 11 teams in the Invitational including the University of Houston, University of Nevada, University of North Texas, Rice University, Air Force, Tulane University, Colorado State University, University of New Mexico, University of Northern Colorado, Washington State University and University of Incarnate Word.
Coming off loss to SEC opponent Arkansas, the Commodores look to regain their success in Houston starting off the Invitational Friday morning with the prelims for the 200 Y Free Relay, 500 Y Free, 200 Y IM and 50 Free, while closing the prelims with the 400 Y Medley Relay.
In the prelims, the Dores will look to qualify for a second swim which will take place Friday night during the finals for each event held in the prelims. The top 40 swimmers in each prelim event will advance to the final round for their respective event.
Saturday the Commodores kick off day two of the Phill Hansel Invitational with the prelim rounds of the 200 Y Medley Relay, 400 Y IM, 100 Y Fly, 200 Y Free, 100 Y Breast, 100 Y Back and the 800 Y Freestyle Relay followed by the final rounds for each event taking place Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
The Dores will conclude the Invitational Sunday racing in the 1650 Y Free, 200 Y Back, 100 Y Free, 200 Y Breast, 200 Y Fly and the 400 Y Freestyle Relay prelims looking for a chance at competing in the final rounds Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Commodores expect stellar competition this week, as the University of Houston rides a two-year winning streak at the Phill Hansel Invitational under Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka. In all, 11 of the 12 teams competing in this year’s Invitational return with veteran swimmers that competed in the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Last season the Commodores earned multiple personal best times at the Phill Hansel Invitational and closed the Invitational finishing in sixth place. The Dores look to build on that success this weekend.
