CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Vanderbilt Commodores went on the road for the final time this season and looked to stop a three game losing streak Saturday night against Cincinnati. The game was tied four separate times and unfortunately the Bearcats would have the last possession and made the most of it, scoring with three seconds left to win 10-9.
The first half was a defensive battle as both teams settled in and did not allow many goals. Cincinnati scored the first two goals of the contest and had a 2-0 lead with 24:06 left in the first half.
The Dores would answer back with two goals of their own just 34 seconds apart. Jill Doherty scored the first goal for the Dores and then Kayla Peterson followed it up with a goal of her own off the feed from Emily Mathewson. The game was tied at 2 with just over 20 minutes to play in the first half.
Cincinnati would answer with a 2-0 run of its own and brought the lead back up to 4-2 with 13:35 left in the first half.
Kayla Peterson would step up again for the Commodores less than 30 seconds after the Bearcats goal. She scored her second goal of the night off the assist from Julie Blaze to make it a one-goal deficit with 13:06 left.
The Bearcats would score the final two goals of the half and took a 6-3 lead going into the break.
The second half started with another goal for the Bearcats. Elaina Enich scored her third goal of the game at the 27:27 mark and gave Cincinnati a 7-3 lead.
The Dores would answer in a big way with a 4-0 run to tie the game. MacKenzie Lange would answer Enich’s goal 17 seconds later to make it a 7-4 game.
Melanie Becker would score the next two goals just over a minute apart for the Commodores to make it a one-goal game. Emily Mathewson would tie the game for the Dores at seven with 15:45 left in the half.
Cincinnati would answer the 4-0 run for the Commodores with a goal from Monica Borzillo. The Bearcats would hold an 8-7 lead with 8:37 left.
The Dores would answer and tie the game again and this time Caroline Peters would step up. She scored her first goal of the game with 6:46 remaining to tie the game at eight.
The Bearcats would have an answer and it was Borzillo again with the goal with 1:27 remaining after a few back-and-forth possessions between the two teams.
The Commodores would not let that be the last goal of the game as Julie Blaze scored her first goal of the game with 25 seconds left to tie the game at nine.
The game looked destined for overtime but the Bearcats took advantage of a late foul call on the Commodores. Amanda Donovan would score off the assist from Katie Stegmann with three seconds remaining to claim the 10-9 win.
The Dores will return home this week for their final game of the season. They will take on Marquette this Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The game is slated for a 1 pm CT start.
