The #14-ranked Commodore women’s golf team shot a first-round 299 and lead the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate by 10 strokes after day one in Augusta, Ga. Five Vanderbilt players are in the top 12 in the individual standings, with freshman Simin Feng and sophomore Jennifer Hahn leading the way with each shooting a two-over par, 74. Both are in a tie for third on the individual leader board.
Junior Kendall Martindale carded a first-round 75 and is in seventh place, freshman Antonia Scherer is in a tie for eighth after firing a 76 on Friday, and junior Irina Gabasa is in a tie for 12th after shooting a 77.
As a team, the Commodores hold a 10-stroke lead on second-place East Tennessee State and a 12-stroke advantage on third-place Illinois.
“The greens were really fast and firm today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We made a few mistakes out there today, but overall, the girls gave a tremendous effort. We’re looking forward to tomorrow and the opportunity that awaits us.”
Feng and Hahn are tied with Stephanie Miller of Illinois for third, and trail Lacey Fears of Mercer and Samantha Postitllion of Illinois, who lead all individuals at one-over par, 73.
The final two rounds of the tournament at the par 72, 6,214-yard Forest Hills Golf Club will be played on Saturday. The tournament, originally scheduled for three days, has been trimmed to two because of impending weather on Sunday.
