Commodores in hunt for Nationals berth

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in ninth place heading into the final day of the 2010 NCAA East Region Championship at the Course at Yale.

Only five teams will advance from the field of 14 schools. With 18 holes left to play Saturday, the Commodores are just three strokes out of a spot in the 2010 NCAA National Championship.

“We are right in the thick of it,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “Tomorrow should be a very exciting day. There will be lots of leaderboard watching. The guys are very excited.”

At eight-over (285-283–568), the Commodores are 13 strokes off the lead shared by Texas and Kent State, both five-under. Penn State is third at even-par, followed by UCLA (three-over) and Virginia (five-over). ETSU, UNC Wilmington and Charlotte are tied for sixth at six-over.

Vanderbilt was led by Hudson Johnson and Chris Rockwell on Friday. Both Commodore seniors shot even-par on the day. Johnson and junior Ryan Haselden are both tied for 10th after 36 holes of play. Haselden shot a one-over 71 in the second round. Sophomore Trey DelGreco’s two-over 72 was the Commodores’ fourth counted score on Friday, while classmate Charlie Grace shot a six-over 76.

The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. ET Saturday for the third and final round. Vanderbilt will leave from the 10th tee with ETSU and Charlotte.
