NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Commodores begin a crucial conference stretch over the next week and a half and it starts this weekend in our nation’s capital. The Dores are set to face Georgetown on Saturday at 12 pm CT.
Heading into the game, Georgetown and Vanderbilt are two of four teams that are currently tied in second place in the BIG EAST with 3-1 conference records. The other two teams are Denver and Temple, which are the Commodores next two opponents after this weekend.
The Commodores are coming off a 16-8 win at home on Wednesday over UConn. The Dores took control for most of the game and used a 6-2 surge in the second half to propel them to victory. Senior Jill Doherty led the way for the Dores with four goals, four draw controls, three assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Madison Foglio earned her first collegiate start and picked up the win while making ten saves on the afternoon.
The Dores have five players this season that have scored in double-digits. Junior Kayla Peterson leads the team in goals with 25 and is eighth in the BIG EAST in goals per game with 2.50. Julie Blaze ranks second on the team with 24, followed by Jill Doherty (21), Emily Mathewson (16), and Melanie Becker (12). Doherty leads the team in draw controls (52), points (41), ground balls (21), assists (20) and is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (12). She ranks second in the conference in draw controls per game (5.2) and fifth in assists per game (2.00).
Defender Margaret Fee is tied with Doherty with 12 caused turnovers on the year and is second on the team in ground balls with 17. In the cage, all three Commodore goalies have seen time this season. Callahan Kent has amassed a 4-3 record with 40 saves and 8.35 goals against average. Lily Argyle has a 1-1 record with 21 saves in six games this season. Madison Foglio has a 1-0 record and made 14 saves in four appearances.
Georgetown enters the game with a 5-7 record overall and is coming off a come from behind win against Villanova on Wednesday. The Hoyas used two 3-0 runs in the second half to defeat the Wildcats 14-12. The Hoyas hold an 8-0 advatage all-time against the Commodores. They defeated the Dores 7-5 last year on West End.
Sophomore Taylor Gebhardt leads the team in goals with 23 while fellow sophomore Francesca Whitehurst leads the team in draw controls (47), points (33) and assists (14). Senior defender Jenny Schwalje is the team leader in ground balls (21) and caused turnovers (15). In the cage, Maddy Fisher has started all 12 games for the Hoyas. She has made 75 saves and amassed a 4-6 record.
