Commodores Head to Athens for Southern Intercollegiate Athens, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team will send six players to the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships this weekend at the Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The event will feature more than 140 players representing 25 teams in the southeast, and the Commodores are the only squad to feature a pair of top seeds in main draw of both singles and doubles. Junior Matt Lockin, ranked No. 35 in the nation, is seeded third in the main singles draw. He is joined by junior Scott Brown, whose national ranking of 73rd has garnered him the sixth seed in the tournament. Senior Zach Dailey will also be featured in the tournament’s top singles draw. Senior Lewis Smith and sophomore Greg Sossaman will participate in the Division II singles draw, while senior Jens Pillgram-Larsen will take part in the third flight. The singles draw will kick off at 7:45 a.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 19. In the top doubles draw, Brown will team up with Dailey to form the sixth-seeded doubles team, while Lockin and Smith will represent Vanderbilt at No. 7. Sossaman and Pillgram-Larsen will join forces to take on the second doubles flight. All doubles action begins on Saturday, Sept. 20. For Vanderbilt, the Magill Tennis Center is a familiar site. The Commodores advanced to the 2003 NCAA Championship there in May of this year. “I am looking forward to going back to Athens again,” Coach Ken Flach said. “We had an incredible run to the NCAA Championship. I’m still not sure if I am totally over the very tough loss to Illinois in the finals, but I am ready to get started. I am very excited about our team and the challenges we face to repeat last year’s success.” |
