NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team was unable to keep pace with top-ranked American Lacrosse Conference rival Northwestern Sunday, falling by a 18-8 tally to the undefeated Wildcats at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Junior Kate Hickman led all scorers with five goals. Freshman Margie Curran added two goals, while redshirt-freshman Ali Lemons scored one on an eight-meter attempt.

Northwestern scored the first four goals of the game before Curran got Vanderbilt on the board in the 16th minute. The Wildcats would then tally five more goals before two Hickman tallies brought the score to 9-3. Aly Josephs’ fourth goal of the half gave NU a 10-3 lead going into the break.

The Wildcats expanded their lead in the second half, scoring six of the period’s first seven goals to hold a 16-4 advantage in the 43rd minute. Hickman notched the next three goals of the contest to bring the deficit within nine goals. The teams traded goals in the final five minutes to bring the eventual 18-8 score.

Lindsey Munday put together a four-goal, two-assist performance to lead the Wildcats with six total points. Four other Wildcats — Sarah Albrecht (5), Kristen Kjellman (4), Josephs (4) and Laura Glassanos (3) — each scored at least three points.

Kjellman controlled nine draws for Northwestern, one more than Vanderbilt’s team total. The Dores were led by Lemons’ two draw controls.

On the defensive end, sophomore Molly Frew had eight ground balls for the Commodores while also causing three turnovers. Senior Kim Gianis and freshman Sasha Cielak each added a pair of caused turnovers.

Prior to the game, Vanderbilt honored its senior class of 2005 — Gianis, midfielder Meg Spies and goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli. The trio played its final game at the VU Lacrosse Complex Sunday.

Vanderbilt (6-8, 3-3 ALC) will close the 2005 regular season on Saturday, May 7, when the team travels to Ithaca, N.Y., to face Cornell.
