Commodores Fall At Cornell, 13-10

5/7/2005

ITHACA, N.Y. — The 18th-ranked Vanderbilt lacrosse team dropped its final game of the season Saturday, falling 13-10 at Cornell. Freshman Margie Curran scored a career-high six points for the Commodores on five goals and an assist.

With the loss, Vanderbilt ends the 2005 season with a record of 6-9 (3-3 in the American Lacrosse Conference). Cornell improves to 9-6 on the year, but the Big Red also have most likely finished the 2005 slate.

Cornell opened the game on a 4-0 run, holding Vanderbilt scoreless until the 13:05 mark of the first half. The Commodores got on the board in the 14th minute when freshman Margie Curran scored her 26th goal of the season.

Freshman Ashley Paschall would notched her fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute and Curran scored again with 10 seconds remaining in the half, but VU trailed, 6-3, at the break.

The teams traded goals to begin the second half. Curran and sophomore Kendall Thrift each score for the Dores in the first 11 minutes of the second half. In the 44th minute, junior Kate Hickman scored her team-leading 41st goal of the season off an assist from redshirt-freshman Ali Lemons, but two consecutive Cornell tallies gave the Big Red a 12-6 advantage.

The Commodores began to mount a comeback, as a pair of goals from Curran and Thrift cut the lead to four. But a CU goal in the 53rd minute put the Big Red back up by five. Despite a pair of late goals by Curran (assisted by junior Bryn Sedlacek) and Lemons (assisted by Curran), the Commodores were unable to get closer than a three-goal deficit.

CU’s Katherine Simmons scored five goals in the contest. In goal, Cornell’s Ashley Blum saved five shots, while VU’s Ashley Bastinelli made six saves.

Defensively, freshman Sasha Cielak caused a pair of CU turnovers. VU’s Curran, Sedlacek, sophomore Molly Frew and freshman Michele Slotke all scooped up three ground balls.
