NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team withstood a second-half rally by Marquette to pick up its fourth straight win.
The Commodores jumped out to a six-goal halftime lead and survived a comeback by the Golden Eagles for a 11-9 victory on Wednesday at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Amanda Lockwood and Caroline Peters – the last two BIG EAST Attackers of the Week – each scored twice and seven others netted goals as Vanderbilt matched its longest winning streak since 2012.
With the win, Vanderbilt (7-8, 4-2 BIG EAST) gets one step closer to clinching a berth in the BIG East Tournament. The top four teams in the eight-team league make the postseason tournament and the Commodores can lock up a spot with a win in their final game of the regular season on Sunday at Villanova.
Alexa Kunowsky scored 20 seconds into the game on a pass by Mallory Schonk to get the scoring going as Vanderbilt never trailed. Four straight goals in a four-minute span late in the second half – by Schonk, Meggie Ramzy, Kayla Peterson and Peters – gave Vanderbilt a 8-2 lead at halftime. But Marquette didn’t surrender, outscoring the Commodores 7-3 in the second half. Vanderbilt was also plagued by 14 second-half turnovers for a total of 22 for the game. The Golden Eagles (4-11, 0-5) pulled within 11-9 with 1:10 remaining. The Commodores then squashed the comeback as Lockwood won the draw control, and the team was able to run out the clock.
Along with Lockwood and Peters, Schonk, Jill Doherty, Kayla Peterson, Leah Peterson, Ramzy and Kunowsky also scored. Schonk also had two assists and Doherty, Lockwood, Peters and Ramzy also dished out assists.
Vanderbilt ends its season at 11 a.m. (CST) on Sunday at Villanova in Philadelphia.Â
