Commodores Down Davidson, 20-3

4/10/2005

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team earned its first American Lacrosse Conference victory of the season with a 20-3 win over Davidson College Sunday at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Ten Commodores tallied goals in the game, led by junior Kate Hickman and sophomore Kendall Thrift with four each. Twenty-three Commodores saw action in Sunday’s game — every active player on the VU roster.

The 17-goal difference marks Vanderbilt’s third highest margin of victory all-time, and is the largest goal differential since the Dores defeated the Wildcats on the road last season, 20-5.

Vanderbilt capped a 7-0 lead in the 18th minute of the first half, following goals from Hickman (3), Thrift, Jennifer Tapscott, Margie Curran and Meredith St. Lawrence. The Commodores took a 9-2 lead into the half after another goal by Thrift and one from Nicole Pugno.

VU ran away with the game in the second half. Goals from Thrift (2), Ali Lemons (2), Christine Tubesing (2), Tapscott, Hickman, Pugno, Wendy Blue and Kasey Pontillo gave the Dores an even 20 goals for the game.

Freshmen Wendy Blue and Kasey Pontillo each scored their first collegiate goal Sunday, as did redshirt-freshman Ali Lemons. Pontillo added her first VU assist on the final Lemons goal.

Hickman, the Commodores leading scorer with 25 goals on the year, added her first two assists of the season. Junior Bryn Sedlacek and a pair of freshmen, Curran and Ashley Paschall, added three assists apiece to the impressive VU effort.

In goal, senior Ashley Bastinelli made seven saves on the day. Her defense played well, with sophomore Molly Frew causing a team-high three turnovers. Bastinelli and Thrift led the Commodores in ground balls with four each, while Paschall came up with a team-leading three draw controls.

Vanderbilt outshot Davidson 45-15 and came up with 12 more ground balls. Missy Gilbert, Millie McKeachie and Kiften Stephens scored the Wildcats’ three goals.

The Commodores travels to Ohio and Ohio State this weekend for a pair of ALC contests. The Ohio match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, April 15, while the Ohio State match will begin at Noon, Sunday, April 17.
