NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Four individuals in double figures scoring. Two with double-doubles. One school game record.
All of that added up to a 102-63 Vanderbilt men’s basketball victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in the program’s debut under first-year head coach Mark Byington at Memorial Gymnasium on Monday.
Devin McGlockton led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Jaylen Carey supplied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Commodores (1-0) scored the most points ever in a head coach’s debut and second-highest total in a season opener in the program’s record books. Jason Edwards added 19 points and a career-high five assists, and Tyler Nickel posted 14 points as well.
McGlockton set a school game record after hitting 100 percent from the floor on 10-of-10 shooting, helping the Dores shoot 50 percent from the floor while outrebounding the Hawks (0-1) by a 48-30 margin. Vandy was credited with 18 assists in the game while committing only one turnover.
The Commodores opened the game on a 15-5 run in the first six-plus minutes, with Edwards scoring seven of those points on a three-pointer and back-to-back layups. The advantage grew to as many as 20, with Vandy taking a 38-18 lead after Tyler Tanner connected on a three-pointer and recorded a steal that led to a dunk on the other end of the floor in a 25-second span with just under six minutes to go before the break.
Vanderbilt would be up 45-33 at the half, with the margin growing to 20 less than five minutes into the second period and 30 with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
Ketron “KC” Shaw paced UMES with 23 points after hitting 8-of-16 from the field, with Cardell Bailey chipping in with 10 points as well. Jalen Ware had a team-high nine rebounds for the Hawks, who were outscored 52-24 in the paint.
The Commodores continue a season-opening four-game homestand Sunday against Southeast Missouri, with opening tip scheduled for 12 p.m.
