NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s golf received Outstanding Team Academic Award recognition from Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday, one day after three-student athletes from the program were named All-America Scholars by the organization.
The 10 Commodores on the roster in 2022-23 combined to record a cumulative grade-point average above a 3.5 for the academic year, earning Vandy Presidents Special Recognition from the GCAA. Matthew Riedel, Gordon Sargent and Cole Sherwood garnered individual GCAA honors after each posted a GPA above a 3.2 while also competing in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions and carrying stroke averages below 76.0 during the season.
On the course, the Dores claimed six tournament titles during the 2022-23 campaign, were the top seed at the NCAA Championships in the spring and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the ninth consecutive season.
In the fall, Vanderbilt opened by winning the Frederica Cup, finished first in stroke play at the SEC Fall Preview and then won the East Lake Cup—which featured the four semifinalists from the 2022 NCAA Championships—with victories over Texas and Arizona State. The Commodores added tournament victories at the Watersound Invitational, Cabo Collegiate and Mason Rudolph Championship in the spring before advancing to the final match of the SEC Championships and placing second at the NCAA Auburn Regional.
