Commodores Blitz Bobcats, 13-3 4/14/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Behind a five-goal performance from senior Kate Hickman, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team handily defeated American Lacrosse Conference rival Ohio University, 13-3, Friday at the VU Lacrosse Complex. The Commodores scored the game’s first eight goals en route to the convincing victory, with junior Kendall Thrift contributing three assists — all to Hickman — and a goal. Thrift opened the scoring only two minutes into the game, connecting on an eight-meter attempt. Forty seconds later, freshman Cara Giordano got on the board, scoring on one of two assists from sophomore Margie Curran. After nine scoreless minutes, the first Thrift-to-Hickman connection came in the 11th minute, giving the Dores a 3-0 lead. Goals from junior Jennifer Tapscott, sophomore Ashley Paschall, Hickman and junior Nicole Pugno stretched the VU lead to eight before the Bobcats were able to score. Ohio scored the final goal of the half with nine minutes remaining on the clock, sending the teams to the intermission with an 8-1 tally. Vanderbilt refused to let up in the second half, opening with a pair of goals from Paschall and Hickman. The Commodores took their first 10-goal lead at the 11:05 mark, when freshman Cameron Clark assisted Hickman on her first goal of the afternoon. The teams traded goals in the final minutes of the game to reach the final score, 13-3. On the day, sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry made four saves, while allowing only two goals. Freshman Rachel Woolford spelled Shinaberry for the final 14 minutes of the game, making one save on an OU free position attempt. Two Bobcat goalkeepers combined to make 17 saves on day. Jen Heup had 12 saves in the first 47 minutes, while Jayme Levy made five stops. The Commodores used the convincing win as an opportunity for a number of athletes to see playing time. Senior Dana Messinger subbed into the VU defense, coming up with one draw control and two ground balls. Sophomore M.C. Hooper came off the bench to contribute a caused turnover. Statistically, the Commodores won both hustle categories. Giordano led the Dores with three ground balls and two draw controls. Junior Molly Frew also came up with two draws in the game. Vanderbilt will close its 2006 home schedule on Sunday, April 16, when Ohio State visits the VU Lacrosse Complex at Noon CT. Admission is free. |
