2/6/2005 The No. 19 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team nabbed its fifth consecutive victory of the 2005 run, blanking Tennessee Tech 7-0 at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday morning. The Commodores got the job done in the doubles draw, taking all three matches in convincing fashion. “Once again, I am very pleased with our doubles play,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Ken Flach. “We are coming out eager and with good intensity. It’s so important to set the tone in the doubles draw.” At the No. 1 position, Vanderbilt’s No. 39 pairing of Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky surrendered a mere three games to Tech’s Shunski Shimizu and Javier Saab, claiming the match 8-3. The Commodore tandem of Andy Mack and Ryan Preston would soon follow suit, matching Brown and Pinsky with an 8-3 tally of their own. Mack and Preston’s triumph at No. 2 sealed the doubles point for Coach Ken Flach’s squad. Vanderbilt completed the doubles sweep with Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik’s “W” at No. 3. The Commodore duo defeated Tech’s Michele Panzeri and Juan Pablo Gomez, 8-2. Vanderbilt’s freshman sensations came up big against the Golden Eagles in the singles draw, giving the Dores their second and third points of the day. VU freshman Ryan Preston would be the first Commodore to hit the locker room after his 6-0, 6-1 lashing of Tech’s Saab at the No. 4 position. Preston improves his 2005 singles mark to 4-1. Not a minute later, Pinsky defeated Tech’s Borja Zarco, 6-1, 6-2 to match his freshman counterpart with a 4-1 record. Vanderbilt’s Mack would stay unbeaten in 2005, dismantling the Golden Eagles’ Tiago Gilioli in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Dores. The nation’s 17th ranked player in VU’s Scott Brown outlasted his opponent as well, dropping Tech’s Shimizu in straights, 6-3, 6-3. The Commodores finished off the Golden Eagles with Jordan Magarik’s 8-4 victory at No. 6 and Matt Lockin’s three set triumph at No. 2. With the victory over Tech, the Commodores run their spring record to 5-0. “I’m really pleased with the way everyone is playing,” said Flach. “I am excited and I think we could really surprise some people this year.” The Dores return to action at the Currey Tennis Center on Feb. 12 when they take on the Furman Paladins at 1:00 p.m. Doubles Singles |
