Commodore Lacrosse Earns Academic Honors From IWLCA

7/8/2005

The Vanderbilt lacrosse team was honored as a 2005 Academic Squad recently by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. The award is given to collegiate teams that earn a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester.

Three Commodore student-athletes also received individual praise from the IWLCA, as senior Meg Spies, junior Kate Hickman and junior Christine Tubesing were named to the 2005 National Honor Roll. Seniors and juniors who earn a GPA of 3.2 or better during the spring semester are eligible for the honor roll.

“I’m extremely proud of our team for this accomplishment,” Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “These ladies work hard on the field as well as in the classroom, and it is nice for them to receive recognition for their efforts.”

Spies is one of three graduating seniors on the 2005 squad, a group which won 35 games during four seasons at Vanderbilt. Hickman and Tubesing will make up half of next year’s senior class, as 21 letterwinners return for the Commodores in 2006.

A total of thirteen Commodores have earned honor roll status since 1998, including a pair of honorees during VU’s Final Four run in 2004. Vanderbilt last earned Academic Squad status in 2002.
