Commodore Golfers Win Tournament of Champions The Vanderbilt men’s golf team won its fourth tournament in three years Tuesday by claiming the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The Commodores stormed back from fourth place on the final day, shooting nine-under par to finish at 15-under par for 54 holes. The Swedish National Team, the leader after 36 holes, was second while Tennessee was third, seven shots back. Mark Donnell, a junior from Mobile, Alabama, shot an even par 72 Tuesday to add to Monday’s 70-67 and led Commodore golfers. He placed sixth individually at seven-under 209. Aron Price of Georgia Southern was -13 (69-66-68) to take medalist honors. Lance Goodson and Luke List fired four-under 68’s Tuesday and Ben McClung added a 71 to complete Vanderbilt scoring. Dos Goldsmith’s 75 was not factored into Tuesday’s team score. “We encountered almost the identical situation today that we experienced last week at the SMU Stonebridge tournament,” Coach Press McPhaul said. “We were fourth both weeks going into the last round, seven shots behind the team leader. The wind came up at both events but while we didn’t handle things well in Dallas, we learned our lessons and got it done today. The team played terrific golf.” Two years ago the Commodore men won the Adams Cup championship. A year ago Vanderbilt won its own Mason Rudolph Championship and the Johnny Owens Invitational at Kentucky. Day 1Vanderbilt’s men’s golf team enjoyed its finest day of the fall season, shooting a team six-under par after 36 holes of the 54-hole Coca Cola Tournament of Champions hosted by the University of Tennessee.
