Commodore fans can watch weekend football practices

On campus in Nashville – Vanderbilt fans are invited to get an up-close look at Derek Mason’s Commodore squad this weekend.

Mason is opening the team’s Saturday and Sunday practices to Commodore fans. Both sessions are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

“This team is working extremely hard, and doing a tremendous job working to improve every day,” Mason said. “I’m opening the practices this weekend so Commodore fans can see the effort and commitment of this team for themselves.”

The Commodores began preseason camp Thursday afternoon with a high-tempo session in the Indoor Practice Facility, and are expected to return to the practice field this afternoon.

Barring inclement weather, the team’s Saturday and Sunday sessions will take place at the John Rich Practice Facility, located behind McGugin Athletics Center. Gates will open each day at 3 p.m. Free parking will be available in the Medical Center lots 73-75 across Natchez Trace from the practice field and track & field complex.

Public access at the practice field will be restricted to the hillside next to Natchez Trace and the sidewalks adjoining McGugin Center. Photo and video use will not be allowed.

The open Saturday session also follows the Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball Alumni Game, which starts at 10:30 a.m., in Memorial Gym. More than 50 former Commodore hoops standouts are expected to participate in the event, which also features free admission.

The open practices come one week before Vanderbilt Athletics holds its popular Dore Jam Fan Day. The free activity, which gives fans an opportunity to meet their favorite Commodore student-athletes and coaches, is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2-4 p.m. It will take place in the Indoor Practice Facility for the second straight year.
