Commodore Comeback Gives Scare To Defending National Champs

4/24/2005

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team came up just short of an upset bid Sunday at defending national champion Virginia, 12-11. Commodore junior Kate Hickman scored three goals in the final minutes of the game to bring Vanderbilt within a goal of the Cavaliers, but Virginia snuck away with a one-goal win after picking up a caused turnover in the Dores’ offensive zone with less than a minute to play.

Hickman scored five goals and also had one assist on the day. Amy Appelt, the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, matched Hickman’s day with six points of her own.

Sophomores Jennifer Tapscott (three goals, one assist) and Kendall Thrift (two goals, two assists) each added four points for the Commodores, while freshman Margie Curran had one goal and one assist. Defensively, Vanderbilt was led by sophomore Molly Frew. Frew forced four UVA turnovers and scooped a game-high six ground balls.

The matchup of 2004 Final Four squads lived up to its preseason billing, as the game came down to the wire. Virginia held a four-goal lead after Appelt scored her fifth goal of the match at the 53:48 mark.

Hickman then took over the game, scoring three consecutive goals to bring the Commodores within one at 12-11 with just under a minute in regulation. With 55 seconds to go, Vanderbilt won the draw and setup its attack, but the fourth-ranked Cavaliers caused a late turnover and were able to run out the clock.

Senior Meg Spies controlled six draws for Vanderbilt, helping the Commodores gain valuable possessions as they mounted their comeback. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made eight saves in the match.

Vanderbilt will honor its three seniors on Sunday, May 1, prior to a 1 p.m. matchup against No. 1 Northwestern at the VU Lacrosse Complex in Nashville.
