Welcome to first edition of Commodore Classics where VUCommodores.com provides fans with a look at footage from historic games and moments in Vanderbilt’s athletic history.

Today, we present highlights from Vanderbilt’s 24-10 win over No. 8 Florida in football on Oct. 12, 1974. The game was played at Dudley Field and gave the Commodores a 3-1 record en route to a 7-3 season that was capped at the Peach Bowl.

Vanderbilt struck first in the game with a rushing touchdown by Jamie O’Rourke with 14:50 to play in the first half. However, the extra point failed and Florida took its only lead of the game after an 8-yard touchdown run by Tony Green with 11:47 to play in the first half.

Vanderbilt regained the lead for good when quarterback David Lee barreled his way for a 7-yard score. Lee, who replaced starter Fred Fisher, would then connect with Barry Burton for a 2-point conversion to give the Commodores a 14-7 lead with 11:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Lee would also pass for a touchdown when he again found Burton wide open in the end zone for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The Commodores won despite turning the football over six times. Florida had three turnovers as well.

O’Rourke led Vanderbilt with 104 yards rushing on 22 carries. Lee finished 8-of-11 passing for 128 yards. The Gators started Donald Gaffney at quarterback, but also used James Fisher. Green led the Gators on the ground with 51 yards rushing.
