BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt swimmer Jess Cohen is one of eight swimmers from the Southeastern Conference to be named to the 2009 SEC Swimming and Diving Community Service Team, in a release by the SEC office. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to her community in superior service efforts.
“Jess is very deserving of being named to this team,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “She is very dedicated to giving back to the community.”
In addition to being the swimming and diving representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and coordinating student-athlete community service efforts, Cohen has become very involved in a program called Well Worth It. After traveling to Africa last summer and volunteering, she and a group of other individual volunteers on the same trip, started the program “Well Worth It” in order to build a viable clean water source for the village of Emori-Joi in Kenya. The program is underway and Cohen is making a large contribution and effort towards achieving the program’s goal.
“Jess is a wonderful asset to Vanderbilt’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is very deserving of this honor,” said CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator Allison Bush. “Not only is she making a difference in the Vanderbilt and Nashville community, her service is spread world-wide with her service efforts in Africa. Due to her exemplary qualities and desire to serve the community, I look forward to what Jess will achieve during her time as a Vanderbilt student-athlete,” Bush said.
