Commitments for the Vanderbilt men’s tennis 2004 recruiting class

Nashville, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis head coach Ken Flach announced the signing of three prep standouts to national letters of intent during the early signing period. Coach Flach received commitments from Luka Cerenko (Atlanta, Ga.), Jason Pinsky (Potomac, Md.) and Ryan Preston (Northbrook, Ill.) for the 2004-05 school year.

“I am very pleased with this class,” Flach said. “These three guys have shown that they can balance academics and athletics, and excel on the court as well as in the classroom. They all want to work hard and get better, and those attributes will help us win national championships.”

Cerenko comes to Vanderbilt from the Atlanta area. He is currently enrolled at Ben Franklin Academy, but attended the Marist School for three years and led the War Eagles’ to a pair of state championships. Cerenko claimed a national open singles championship earlier in 2003, and also has competed in a number of super-national events.

“Luka comes from a very athletic family,” Flach said. “His father was a basketball player, his mother was a competitive swimmer and his older brother Marko was one of the top collegiate tennis players a few years ago. Luka is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps, and he has the athletic ability to do just that. It will be a pleasure to have him on the team, as he has a great work ethic and is extremely determined to achieve his goals.”

Pinsky joins the Commodores from Winston Churchill High School in the Washington D.C. suburb of Potomac. He won the state singles championship as a freshman and was runner-up the following year, while leading the Bulldogs to the regional finals. In one summer, Pinsky won a pair of doubles championships at a super-national clay court tournament and an international hard court event.

“Jason is an incredible fighter on the court,” Flach said. “He will never ever give up. Jason is very mature and disciplined. He works hard on and off the court, and as a result is very strong and fit. Jason has a good head on his shoulders and is very eager to learn and improve so for that reason he will be very coachable and I look forward to the opportunity to work with him.”

Preston hails for the Chicago area, where he attends New Trier High School in Winnetka. He has led the Trevians to a pair of state championships, while finishing as high as second in Illinois singles competition. Preston also took second place in a midwest regional event, and has competed in many national events.

“Ryan has a great deal of upward potential,” Flach said. “He is a classic case of a ‘late bloomer.’ Ryan has grown a lot in the last year and still has a lot of growing yet to do. The added height has given Ryan a more powerful game. His serve is becoming a real weapon and will only get stronger as he fills out. Ryan is very easy going and has a great personality, which will make him very easy and enjoyable to coach.”
