Cielak Earns National Recognition

4/20/2005

Vanderbilt freshman defender Sasha Cielak earned national recognition this week for her outstanding play in a pair of conference victories at Ohio and Ohio State. Cielak was named to the weekly honor rolls of Inside Lacrosse and WomensLacrosse.com.

“We have been very pleased with Sasha’s play this year,” Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “She has played so consistently, and seems to rise to the occasion when the pressure is at its greatest. It is hard to believe that she is only freshman. We can all expect her to do great things throughout her career.”

The Sparks, Md. native has been the Commodores’ top matchup defender this season, routinely marking the opposing team’s most potent scorer.

Against Ohio, she helped hold the Bobcats to only six goals by causing four turnovers, picking up four ground balls and controlling a pair of draws.

Two days later, Cielak caused caused a pair of turnovers and had two more draw controls. In the sudden victory period, she came up with her third ground ball of the game to give the Vanderbilt its decisive possession.
