Cielak, Curran earn All-America honors

May 29, 2008

Vanderbilt seniors Sasha Cielak and Margie Curran earned national All-America honors from the IWLCA and US Lacrosse, the governing bodies of collegiate lacrosse announced Thursday.

Cielak becomes the second Commodore to earn first-team All-America recognition after Michelle Allen was so honored in 2004. A defensive midfielder from Sparks, Md., Cielak was named an All-American for the third time in her career.

Vanderbilt’s top matchup defender, Cielak is the Commodores’ all-time leader in caused turnovers. She was a Tewaaraton nominee this year as Vanderbilt posted a school-record 13 victories.

Curran earned second-team All-America honors for the second consecutive season. The Moorestown, N.J., product became Vanderbilt’s all-time leader in career points, assists and draw controls this season.

In all, the IWLCA and US Lacrosse honored 48 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-American teams. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 14, 2008, in King of Prussia, Pa.

The IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association) was founded on the principle of developing among intercollegiate coaches a deep sense of responsibility in teaching, promotion, and maintaining the growth of women’s lacrosse in accordance with the highest ideals of fair play. It is a body committed to being an integral part of the growth and direction of our collegiate sport.

US Lacrosse, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the national governing body for men’s and women’s lacrosse.
