BALTIMORE, Md. — Sasha Cielak and Margie Curran, two juniors on the Commodore women’s lacrosse team, both earned second-team All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and US Lacrosse.
Cielak has been the Commodore’s most-feared defender for the past three seasons, consistently marking the opponent’s top scoring threat. Again this year, she led the squad in caused turnovers (43) and ground balls (40), while also ranking third in draw controls (27).
Curran became only the second player in Commodore history to score 50 goals in one season. For her career, she has amassed 164 points and currently ranks fifth all-time in both goals and points.
A total of 48 student-athletes in Division I were selected as first-, second- and third-team All-Americans. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 16, 2007 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
Both Cielak and Curran earned first-team All-West/Midwest Region honors from the IWLCA last week. Sophomore Cara Giordano, who scored 26 goals and was second on the team in both draw controls and caused turnovers, was a second-team All-Region choice.
The IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association) was founded on the principle of developing among intercollegiate coaches a deep sense of responsibility in teaching, promotion, and maintaining the growth of women’s lacrosse in accordance with the highest ideals of fair play.
