Christine Breaux named assistant coach

Aug. 25, 2011

Former Ole Miss standout Christine Breaux has joined the Vanderbilt women’s soccer program as an assistant coach, Head Coach Derek Greene announced this week.

A 2005 freshman All-American and 2008 All-Southeastern Conference honoree, Breaux started all 81 matches in her career at Ole Miss, where Greene was the associate head coach.

“We are thrilled to have Christine join our staff and soccer family at Vanderbilt,” Greene said. “The moment I found out I was going to be named head coach, I immediately thought of Christine because I know what a great person and competitor she is. She embodies everything you want a person to stand for in life. Coaching her at Ole Miss was so easy because whatever you asked her to do, she did it 100% every time.”

“I can’t believe that I am here in Nashville with the opportunity to coach at Vanderbilt with Derek,” Breaux said. “I have so much respect for Derek, and I know that I am learning from the best. This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime, and I will do everything in my power to help Derek and Sebastian take this team back to the NCAA Tournament.”

A native of Gonzales, La., Breaux prepped at Dutchtown High School, where she earned All-State honors three times and was named the 2004-05 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year. She was a member of the three-time state champion Baton Rouge Soccer Club and was selected to the ODP U-19 South Region team in 2006.

Breaux made an immediate impact upon her arrival in Oxford, starting every game while leading Ole Miss in minutes played. She was named a third-team Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz after helping the Rebel defense set a school record with 12 shutouts.

Later in her Ole Miss career, Breaux moved from the back line into the midfield, where she would earn second-team All-SEC honors and be voted the team’s most valuable player.

“Christine is the most consistent and competitive player I have ever coached,” Greene said. “That competitive spirit is one of the things I love about her and why I know she is going to be a great coach. Effort and winning are important to her. She started every game of her career, and as hard as she played, for every minute of every game, that alone is impressive.

“Christine’s experience in the SEC will be a tremendous asset to our players, because she lived life in this league for four years and did it very well. She has been volunteering for us since the very end of July and has done an amazing job so far. Sebastian and I are looking forward to working with her, as are the student-athletes.”

After graduating from Ole Miss in 2009 with a liberal arts degree, Breaux joined the Mississippi Teacher Corps. She started the boys soccer program at Byhalia High School in 2010. Breaux earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Ole Miss in May.
